So You Want to be a Writer?

Course duration: 4 weeks

Course Dates: July 29 – August 26, 2019

If you have always wanted to be a writer, this introductory class to the world of freelance writing is for you. It doesn’t matter if you have written something already or have a few ideas whirling around in your head. If you find yourself reading magazines and thinking ‘I could write something like that!’, you probably can. Learn how to brainstorm for ideas, choose an idea and develop it, and send it out like a professional. During this four-week course conducted through a private Facebook group, we will discuss ideas, a writer’s notebook, target audiences, article styles, networking with editors and more. Learn how to start writing for publication.

Course Summary:

Four Week Outline:

Week One: So, you want to be a writer? Why do you want to write? What do you want to write? How writers get ideas and get them on paper. Why keeping a writer’s notebook is important. Using your life experiences and hobbies for material. Studying the different types of articles. Reading like a writer. Why you need clips and how to get them.

Week Two: Researching your subject. Why experts and subjects are so vital to your article. How to find experts, interview them, and work them into your article. Getting a first draft done and the ‘cool down’ stage. Revising and editing. Why titles and subtitles are so important. Sidebars sell!

Week Three: To market, to market we go. Where and how to find markets. The difference between POP and POA markets. Why it’s so important to send your article to the right editor. Working with writer’s guidelines and a market’s demographics. Query letters and writer’s etiquette.

Week Four: Congratulations – it’s your first sale! How to proceed with your first sale. Submitting your work and what to expect. Getting paid, getting copies of your ‘clip’ and understanding your rights. The business side of being a writer. The next assignment. As part of the final week in the course I will be holding a live Zoom Q&A for students to chat with one another and ask whatever questions they need answers to as they begin to take steps on their writing journey.

Course Fee: $197/includes one page critique

Because I work one on one with my students, workshops are limited to five writers per workshop period. For more information or to register for this workshop, contact me today.
